Helpful Capstone Project Writing Ideas

What is a capstone project?

A capstone project usually expands over a two semester period of time. During this time students explore independent research that focuses on a particular question or problem that they have chosen. During this time they are asked to engage in scholarly debates in relevant disciplines, with the guidance of a faculty mentor. At the end of the observation and research there is generally a paper that reflects the students understanding of the topic they have chosen.

Generating Capstone Ideas:

  1. Go for a topic you are passionate about it, or at least have some interest in. Having passion for a subject makes the research portion, and writing portion a bit easier to manage. Picking a subject that you are not interested in will make the process long and drawn out.
  2. Be confident. You want your paper to display confidence in every manner. Never use baseless claims, that is why you have research. Use the research to back up what you are writing about. Always deliver to the audience what they need to know. Make statements matter of fact, and don't leave the clients guessing or having to draw their own conclusions.
  3. 3. If you do not find any topics at the forefront of your mind you will need to dig deep. You may need to take out a sheet of paper and a writing utensil. Ask yourself what is it that you like, or what subjects do you take a particular interest in? Jot down all options and utilize the list to generate your idea for your capstone project.
  4. Once you have jotted down a workable list of options it’s time to narrow down your search. You can do this by researching the topics. A general inquiry about the topic will do. Make note of the amount of research available to you. Scratch out ideas that generate low results as it may be hard to create enough content for your capstone project.

Setting up the structure of your capstone:

There are many things the one can do to set up their capstone project. There needs to be a title page, abstract, table of contents, executive summary, preface, acknowledgments, and advice to future students. Along with that footnotes, cited sources, and appendices are necessary for the completion of such a paper.
